New to the east coast of England I wandered around my new surroundings and took photographs to familiarising myself with the area. I really had no idea how important the pier was to the residents of Walton on the Naze, or how much it was a part of the personality of Walton. As I painted this picture, I was simply playing with perspective. New to art, I had very few colours in my palette which is why it is so monotonal. As my knowledge has evolved I understand now how this lack of choice inadvertently served to benefit the work.
