This painting finished itself. It depicts a spot I walk along regularly at Holland on Sea in Essex. Although the image I was trying to recreate was of quite a calm day, I felt I needed to increase the height of the waves and decrease the size of the beach – but the painting had other ideas and decided it was happy as it was. There is a magnetic feel to the work with the sand being dragged to the sea ready for the next wave to break. It needed to stay that way. I like viewing this painting from the side at quite an acute angle when the sky in particular appears so alive. Painted using a palette knife with an impasto style of application.
